Many travel out of town for Summer, but I find that it is the best season to stay in town as there is always something going on and everyone is in a great mood. From pools to festivals there are lots of ways to stay entertained, well fed, and cool in the Atlanta heat. Here are my picks for Atlanta festivals that you won’t want to miss this Summer.
Virginia Highlands Summerfest – June 6-7
Taking place in the heart of Virginia Highlands and spreading from the crossroads of Virginia and Highland in all directions, this will mark the 32 year for the Virginia Highlands Summerfest with each year getting bigger and more popular. There is plenty to see, buy, eat and drink but I mostly like to walk around, watch the people, and enjoy the energy. I try and go early on either Saturday or Sunday as it isn’t as crowded and gets more crowded as the day progresses. Also, parking can be an issue so I usually park off of Ponce De Leon Place on a side street or just walk from Midtown.
This is one of those festivals that is made up of a lot of different activities, from a 5 K Road Race to a Tour of Homes, so check out out all the events going on and plan accordingly. Food, music, art and people tend to be my focus, but there is stuff for the entire family to enjoy!
Atlanta Street Food Festival - July 11 – Piedmont Park
The Atlanta street food scene is one that is always growing and you can find food trucks around town weekly at various events and scheduled gatherings during lunch or dinner, but the Atlanta Street Food Festival is a chance for you to experience many of what the city has to offer all in one of the best places in Atlanta, Piedmont Park. It is free to attend the event but to buy food and drinks you must purchase a wristband. Don’t worry though because it goes to a good cause!
The event opens at noon and goes until 10, but my experience is that lines get longer and some trucks run out of food as the day progresses so I suggest getting there earlier in the day.
Atlanta Ice Cream Festival – July 25 – Piedmont Park
I stumbled on this festival last year by chance and was so happy that I did. Local venders come out to serve and celebrate what is in my opinion one of the best things ever, ice cream. I think I bought three different kinds last year because I was so excited but only because I like to support local businesses… There is other entertainment as well and they even have health and wellness vendors, but the ice cream was my main focus and I suggest it be yours as well! Hey, it gets hot in Atlanta during the summer so you deserve a cool treat!
Decatur BBQ, Blues, and Bluegrass Festival - August 15 – Oakhurst
If you have never been to Oakhurst you can use this as an excuse to do so. I have friends in the area and love to explore every time I get a chance. There is a good vibe and a growing number of great restaurants and friendly people. This festival features some of Atlanta’s best BBQ, beer, and lots of great music. It is a good way to participate in some southern traditions and have a great time doing so. Also you can feel good knowing that all proceeds from the event go directly back into the Decatur community. There is nothing we like more than a festival, event, or party that is for a good cause!
There are plenty more festivals to enjoy this summer, but these are our recommendations. Stay cool and have fun no matter what you do – that is what Summer in Atlanta is all about!
